I was contacted by Mercedes in Auckland regarding their line of time pieces.
Mercedes collaborated with Tag Heuer to make a few time pieces pre 2010 due to their SLR joint venture so I was intrigued to see the independent 2017 watches.
The entire line is Swiss made and prices range NZ$375 – $1500. I received a quartz chronograph (B66041470) to try out, RRP $475.
The packaging is compact (I am told the auto watches come in a premium box) Compare that to Tissot, which has excellent packaging for a reasonably low end watch. I would put this specific packaging in line with a mid range Citizen or Seiko.
The leather and stitching is good quality, as is the deployment buckle with an engraved logo. Quality to the standard of Tissot or Raymond Weil bracelets.
The pushers are nicely detailed with a resin finish and fluted crown. The level of detail is consistent with a Mont Blanc or Breitling if it had an engraved a logo on the crown.
The dial on this piece is quite busy, my preference is for a clean look but chronographs are popular with collectors. Displayed are arabic numerals & hands matching the colour of the brown leather bracelet. Also a fluted inner dial, chronograph and date at 4:30. The Mercedes logo is well detailed.
The battery is a Swiss Renata and a Ronda 5040.D movement with 13 jewels. This movement is also used by Tag Heuer & Raymond Weil.
This Mercedes Benz watch boasts Swiss quality & details at a reasonable price. The watch retails at about $475 in NZ and rivals entry level Tag Heuer & Raymond Weil or a mid range Tissot which may cost up to $2k.
If you are into motorsport or own a Mercedes this would be a good addition to a collection.
